If you've spent any time online, you've probably seen someone talk about "making money by sharing links." That's affiliate marketing, in its simplest form — but there's more to it than the hype makes it sound.
The simple definition
Affiliate marketing is when you recommend someone else's product to other people, and you earn a commission when someone buys through your unique link. You don't need to create the product, hold inventory, handle customer support, or run a warehouse. Your job is to connect the right person with the right product.
Three parties are always involved:
- The product owner — the person or company that created the product being sold.
- The affiliate (that's you) — the person promoting the product to an audience.
- The buyer — the person who purchases through your link.
Where the commission comes from
When you join an affiliate program, you're given a unique tracking link. That link has a small code attached to it that identifies you specifically. When someone clicks it and buys within a set window of time, the system credits the sale to you, and you're paid a percentage — the commission — that the product owner has already agreed to.
Nobody pays extra because you're involved. The buyer pays the normal price; the commission comes out of what the seller would have spent on marketing anyway.
Why it's a realistic starting point
Affiliate marketing is attractive to beginners for a few honest reasons:
- You don't need money to create a product before you can start.
- You don't need to handle deliveries, refunds, or customer complaints about the product itself.
- You can start learning with the tools you already have — a phone and an internet connection.
What it isn't, is instant or automatic. You still need to understand your audience, choose the right products, and promote consistently. Anyone who tells you otherwise is skipping the part that actually matters.
